Abstract

831,758. Heat exchangers. SOC. BERTIN ET CIE. Oct. 17, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 32498/57. Class.64(3) In a heat exchanger the rate of heat: transfer between a wall and a heat exchanging fluid flowing thereover is increased by discharging into the fluid, jets 3 of the same or a different fluid thereby inducing movement of the heat exchanging fluid towards the wall tending to break up the normally stagnant boundary layer near the wall surface. The jets 3 are preferably provided by causing fluid flowing in tubes 5 at a higher pressure than the ambient fluid to be squirted through nozzles 6 either in the direction towards the wall (Fig. 3) or both towards and away from the wall 4 (Fig. 4). Fig. 5 shows an embodiment in which jet producing tubes are arranged between the external fins 8 of a tubular heat exchange element. The jet fluid passage and jet nozzles may however be incorporated in the fins thus dispending with the tubes 5. Alternative embodiments of the invention in which the jet producing tubes are provided within other tubes of a tubular heat exchanger and in which the jet producing tubes are arranged within a hollow element which is immersed in a liquid, are described.
