Abstract

1318377 Carbon fibres TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 27 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 41378/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Carbon fibre products are obtained by heattreating a fibre of a copolymer comprising from 80-99À95 mol per cent of units of acrylonitrile and from 0À05 to 20 mol per cent of units of a hydroxymethyl vinyl aromatic compound of the formula wherein X is an optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl group and R is H or an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group having up to 12 carbon atoms. The compound of the above formula is preferably #-methylene phenethyl alcohol or a ring-substituted derivative thereof. A third vinyl comonomer (e.g. sodium allylsulphonate) may optionally be included in the copolymer. Heat-treatment of the copolymer fibre is effected at not less than 700‹ C., preferably 1000-1800‹ C.; to obtain graphite fibres, temperatures of 2500-3300‹ C. are used. In a preferred procedure, the fibre is first heated at 150-350‹ C. in air or oxygen (to oxidize the fibre) or in sulphurous acid gas (to sulphurize the fibre) or in nitrogen monoxide (to nitrosate the fibre), and then at 700‹ C. or above under reduced pressure in a non-oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. nitrogen, argon or hydrogen) or in an acidic atmosphere (e.g. hydrogen chloride gas).
