Abstract

1318325 Treating IC engine charge; regulating fuel injection GENERAL MOTORS CORP 27 May 1971 [4 June 1970] 17511/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division G1] The flow of exhaust gas through a passage 74, Fig.6, in heat exchange relation with the manifold intake passages 78, 79, 80, and passages 24, 28, 30, Figs.1 and 3, to the throttle valve controlled intake passages 14 is controlled by a valve 36. The valve 36 is operated in conjunction with the throttle valves 16 through a cam 56, Fig.2, having a surface 70 co-operating with a follower 68 on a lever 44 on the valve shaft 38. The surface 70 may be such that the valve 36 begins to open at about 5 degrees of throttle opening, is fully open between 14 and 20 degrees and is closed again at about 34 degrees. In a manifold (12'), Figs.7 and 8 (not shown), for a V-8 engine the exhaust gas flows through a passage (74'), which extends below the intake passages (78, 79) connecting the individual cylinder intake passages to the manifold inlets (76), and passages (24', 28') within the manifold to ports (84, 86) opening to the intake passages. The exhaust gas control valve may be mounted in the manifold (12') or in an assembly mounted on a pad (82) on the manifold. The electronically controlled fuel injection system, Fig.10, has solenoid-operated injectors 94 and the opening period of the injectors is controlled in accordance with the pressure in the intake manifold by a transducer 124 moving a core 122 between primary and secondary windings 120, 126 and the opening of the valve 36. Opening of the valve 36 adjusts a potentiometer 92a in the primary winding circuit or closes a switch 92b adding a resistance 134 to the secondary winding circuit. The potentiometer 92a or switch 92b is operated by a cam surface (86), Fig.9 (not shown), on the cam 56, Fig.2.
