1317629 Wells &c SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORP 9 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 58405/70 Heading E1F In a well tool comprising a mandrel or body 11, slips 43 for anchoring the tool in a well, an expander 39 movable downwardly to set the slips, means are provided for translating upward force on the mandrel to downward force on the expander to retain the slips in set condition. The tool (a packer) is lowered to the setting position in the well and the mandrel is rotated to the right to free threads 64 on a segmented clutch nut 59 from threads 65 on the mandrel. The clutch nut is carried by the lower housing part 50 of a cage 48 having an upper housing part 49 which carries drag blocks 55 and which is linked to the slips. The mandrel is lowered relative to the cage to cause a sleeve 17 carrying packing 19 to press downwardly on the expander to set the slips. The packing is then set and a part 34 on the mandrel blocks a bypass passage 18 within the packing. As the mandrel moves downwardly its teeth 66 ratchet within the clutch nut and finally lock the packer in its set condition. Upward force on the mandrel resultant upon a pull on the packer support pipe, or on well pressure below the packer, causes the housing part 50 to move upwardly relative to the part 49 to force the segments of a cam ring 78 radially inwardly to cause a segmented clutch ring 85 to grip a sleeve 47 depending from the expander so that further upward force on the mandrel is translated to a downward force on the expander. The packer is released by rotating and pulling upwardly on the mandrel, the threads 66 being left handed so that the rotation raises the mandrel relative to the cage.
