Abstract

1304995 Wells &c BYRON JACKSON INC 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 25886/71 Heading E1F Apparatus for cementing casing C2 in a subaqueous wellbore W2, includes a mandrel M supporting cementing plugs TP, BP by shear pins 35. The mandrel has an annular piston 74 which when the bore of the plug TP is closed is slidable downwardly in a chamber 72 under the effect of mud pressure to press against the plug TP and assist the pressure on the plug in shearing the pins 35. The mandrel, plugs and casing are run into the well on a tool T, the plugs being connected by shear pins 43. A ball 51 is released from a slide 56 to land on a seat 48 in the plug BP, the pins 43 shearing as cement is pumped down the well onto the ball. The descent of the plug BP stops when it reaches the casing shoe S the upper part of the casing then being "on vacuum". Pressure is equalized between the inside and the outside of the mandrel above the plug TP after the passage of the cement, by ports 76, 77. A dart 52 is released from a member 58 and travelling in advance of mud lands in a seat 52a in the plug TP, wiper rings 63 on the dart closing the ports 76, 77. The pressure shockwave produced in the mud when the dart 52 lands is dissipated by mud from the mandrel entering a surge chamber 83 through inlets 81 behind the dart. This prevents the shock wave shearing the pins 35 and ensures a pressure build up followed by a pressure drop measurable at the surface when the plug TP is released by shearing the pins 35 on increasing the mud pressure. The descent of the plug TP behind the cement causes the ball 51 to pass through the bore in the plug BP and seat on a catcher 49a, so that the slurry is forced through apertures 49b in the plug BP and through the shoe into the casing-wellbore annulus, until the plug TP lands on top of the plug BP. The plug BP may be omitted when cementing larger diameter (20 to 30 inch) casings.
