Abstract

1316328 Feeding sheets XEROX CORP 6 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 47466/70 Heading B8R In apparatus for feeding flat articles, e.g. newspapers, one by one from a pile to a machine such as an addressing machine, the pile is moved forward on a band conveyer 26 to devices which separate the bottom articles and move them forward in shingled formation, and means are provided to prevent the upper articles of the pile from toppling off the pile when a pile of too great a height is used. The shingling devices comprise two spaced apart and adjustable shingling gates 35 and a control roller 37 between the gates, which roller rests by its own weight on the articles. An arm 55 depending from and pivoted on a spindle 50 is urged by a spring into the vertical position shown against a stop 78. Another arm 58 is fixed at one end to the arm 58 and at its other end is adjustably pivoted at 63 to a member 62 having an inturned end part 68. A link 71 extends from a pin 71 on the member 62 to a pin 73 adjustable on a fixed arm 75. As the pile is moved forward by the conveyer it tilts the arm 55 until the latter is parallel with the gates 35 so that shingling takes place. At the same time the arm 58 causes the member 62 to be moved behind the top of the pile to prevent the top articles from sliding off the pile. The arm 55 reverts to its vertical position when only a few articles of the pile remain, and the parts 58, 62, 68 resume the position shown. At this point, a switch 25 adjacent to the conveyer 26 causes operation of a supply conveyer 20 to feed a new pile 12 to the conveyer 26.
