Abstract
1,003,360. Endless conveyers. BROOKHIRST IGRANIC Ltd. Oct. 15, 1963 [Oct. 29, 1962], No. 40607/63. Heading B8A. A conveying system for stacks of newspapers comprises a supply conveyer 2, a receiving conveyer having portions 4, 6, 8 adjacent the end of the supply conveyer and extending transversely thereof, and control devices 12, 14 which engage each stack of newspapers as it passes from the supply to the receiving conveyer so as to oppose the initial movement of the stack in the direction of the receiving conveyer and cause it to turn through 90 degrees. The supply conveyer 2, comprises a pair of endless belts 2a driven and supported on a plurality of rollers 2b whilst the sections 6, 8 of the receiving conveyer comprise single endless belts driven and supported on rollers 8b. The centre portion 4 of the receiving conveyer comprises a plurality of rollers 4a driven in either direction by an endless belt thereunder, depending on whether the stack is to be conveyed to the receiving portion 6 or 8. Each controlling device 12, 14 is pivotally mounted on a vertical shaft 12a adjustably secured to the conveyer framework and comprises a lobe-shaped engaging surface 12d the near parallel ends of which are secured to bearing blocks 12e, 12f at top and bottom. These blocks are freely mounted on the shaft 12a, the top one 12e being supported on a shoulder thereon. Midway between the two blocks 12e and 12f, a stop block 12m is secured to the shaft 12a by a pin 12n. A projecting portion 12o of the stop block 12m is used to anchor in vertically spaced relationship, two tension springs 12s, 12t, which resiliently bias the rotatable control device 12 or 14, to its normal angular mid-position relative to the stationary shaft 12a. The other ends of the springs are coupled to hooks 12w mounted on a bracket 12u which is bolted to the inside surfaces of the engaging surface 12d. A stop bracket 12x having a pair of wings 12z is adjustably mounted between the parallel ends of the engaging surface 12d and wings 12z engage the projecting portion 12o and act as stops to limit the rotation of the device 12, 14. Each stack of newspapers comprises a lower batch LB folded one way and an upper batch UB folded the other way. The heights of the control devices 12, 14 are such that if the stack turns in the direction (left, Fig. 5) where the folds of the papers in the lower batch are adjacent the control device, the latter is restricted to the height of the lower batch. If however the same stack is to turn to the right (Fig. 5), the folds are in the upper batch and so the control device must extend up to the top of the stack. This arrangement is to prevent displacement of one batch relative to the other.
