Articles on the belt 10 of a main conveyer may be diverted on to a branch roller conveyer 18 by lowering a portion of the main conveyer run. This portion is supported on wheels 20 which are movable vertically under the control of a linkage (22) and a double-acting cylinder (24) (Fig. 2, not shown). Lowering the belt and wheels 20 causes conveyed articles to be lowered on to transfer wheels 30 arranged so as to cause a moving article to be turned on to the branch roller conveyer 18. Alternatively, this conveyer may be of the belt type and a transfer plate be interposed between the main and branch runs. The rollers 30 define an inclined plane in either or both of two directions, i.e. along the length of the main conveyer and across its width. Operation of sensing means, e.g. a feeler, which controls the cylinder 24, may depend upon the height or width of the articles. By using some form of marking or signal on the articles and by the use of electronic or light-sensitive devices for sensing, articles may be sorted and diverted to various branch runs.
