Abstract
1,203,830. Stacking sheets. STA-HI CORP. 10 Feb., 1969 [13 June, 1968], No. 7038/69. Heading B8R. A stacking device including stack support members moving in a common continuous path downwards past the end of a conveyer and then upwards through a return region is characterized by sheet sensing means acting on an upper extremity of a stack being formed and automatically controlling the drive means for the support members to maintain the top of the stack within a predetermined distance from the conveyer. General arrangement.-The apparatus is generally similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,203,829 and may include the feature of independent drive for alternate stack support members (Figs. 1 and 5, not shown). Sensing height of stack, Fig. 4.-The sensing means 18 is located immediately above the path of travel of publications from the conveyer belts (22, 24), (Fig. 1, not shown), to the stacking region (26), (also Fig. 2, not shown), and comprises a sensing arm 72 which rests on the top of a stack being built up on a support member (28) travelling downwards through region (26) on a conveyer chain. The arm 72 is pivotally connected to frame 74 by a plate 76 pivoted on shaft 78; the plate 76 is resiliently urged by spring 80 to bias arm 72 into engagement with the stack. A recess 86 in plate 76 co-operates with the control bar 81 of a differential transformer 84 supplying the power to the main drive of the support member conveyer chain; thus pivoting of arm 72 due to changes in the position of the top of the stack with respect to conveyers (22, 24) causes compensating changes in the drive for the support members. In the event of a major movement of arm 72, the plate. 76 contacts actuating pin 96 of a safety limit switch 90 which cuts out transformer 84 and applies full power to the drive until the position of the top of the stack is again within the differential control range.
