Abstract

1316057 Treating offal; animal feed SYBRON CORP 20 Aug 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 39205/71 Headings A2B and A2U A dried, non-compacted, free flowing meal obtained from the low-temperature or coldstate rendering of animal or fish materials, particularly slaughterhouse or packing house scrap materials which may contain non-animal material such as straw, sawdust, is separated into fractions by gravity classification. Separated fractions may be recombined to produce blends suitable for production of gelatin or for use as animal feeds. As shown, animal scraps &c. are fed to a grinder 4 where they are reduced to particle sizes in the range 1/4 to 1¢ inch and then fed by a pump 7 to a scroll-type centrifugal separator 12 where the temperature is raised to between 150‹ and 220‹F by injection of steam at 10, such treatment, which is not at sufficiently high temperature to cause degradation of the protein &c.. being defined as cold-state rendering. The separated solids pass to a dryer 17 and the resultant meal is divided according to particle size on a screen 18. At least one of the fractions from the screen is fed to a gravity clasifier 23 in which a fan-generated, countercurrent air flow separates the material on a specific gravity basis into various fractions 30, 31, 32, 33, and a dust fraction collected at 34.
