Abstract

A process and a mfg. plant are claimed for the prepn. of ox bones for the prodn. of gelatin. The bones are first crushed to a screen size of 5 - 10 mm and the crushed bones then heated for 20 - 30 mins. at =65 degrees C. The bones then being drained and spin-dried before storing for about 3 hours in a controlled atmos. of an inert gas. The fat content of the bone material is reduced to =1% by extraction with hexane and the material is then screened to eliminate particles =3mm., the retained fraction being polished by rotary barrelling after which fines and over-size particles are sepd. by secondary screening. The heating stage is pref. carried out under vacuum to ensure dehydration of the bone material. Pref. also, the fat content after extraction is down to about 0.5%.
