Abstract

1315863 Small arms COLT INDUSTRIES OPERATING CORP 8 Sept 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 42894/70 Heading F3C An automatic pistol has a receiver 12, Fig. 1, having a barrel 14 and a slide 16 thereon, the latter moving the barrel between forward and rear positions, an en bloc fire control group 70 is removably secured to the receiver and has a housing 72 with a hammer 26 supported thereby for pivotal movement between a fired position and a cocked position. The housing 72 has an integral stabilizing extension 82 having a plug 80 mounted therein for co-operative engagement with the receiver 12 at a location which is spaced from the hammer pivot axis X-X a sufficient distance to precisely locate the en bloc fire control group 70 in preselected operative position in the receiver while maintaining said en block fire control group against undesired rocking movements in directions of hammer pivoting. The housing 72 of the fire control group 70 has pins 52, 74 and 76 which support the hammer 26, single action sear 46 and its spring 60 for pivotal movement, in addition a hammer strut 64, a main spring 54 and its plunger 66 are supported by the housing. To locate the fire control group 70 within a receiver hand-grip 88, a free rear finger 36 of a trigger bar 32 is positioned within a window (not shown) in the housing 72. The latter is inserted into a pocket 90 in the receiver 12, and, having a rear wall 92 and a side projection 96, Fig. 3, is supported in the pocket at 98 and 100, Fig. 4. The plug 80, Fig. 1, projects into an opening 102 in the hand-grip 88 and restrains the fire control group 70 in one direction of movement within the receiver 12, the slide 16 restraining the fire control group in the other direction of movement. The fire control group 70 also fastens grip panels 108 in position. The barrel 14 is provided with a barrel guide and stop mechanism 120 which locates and connects the barrel to the slide 16. Upon movement of the slide 16 to retract the barrel 14, a forward camming pin 124, Fig. 2, supports a flat contact face 134 on a barrel lug 122 extending between its front abutment 128 and a forwardly and upwardly extending inclined shoulder 136 on the leading face of the barrel lug 122. After the contact face 134 clears the forward pin 124, a rear abutment 130, Fig. 1, engages a lower portion of a rear pin 126 which cams the barrel 14 downwardly to an extent limited by full contact engagement between the rear abutment 130 and the rear pin 126 as shown in Fig. 2, where the barrel is disengaged from the slide 16 to permit further rearward movement of the barrel for cartridge extraction &c. The forward pin 124 guides the barrel upwardly in timed relation to the forward movement of the slide and positions an enlarged rear barrel portion 22 between slide shoulders 20, 140. This prevents further forward movement of the barrel and the slide which are now in the required position for the firing of the next round. The pin 124 may act as a pivot for a slide "stopopen" latch 142, Fig. 5, or may be releasablyfastened so as to facilitate the removal of the barrel from the slide 16 and its reassembly therewith.
