Abstract

1311166 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE AG 13 July 1970 [14 July 1969] 33934/70 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Non-metallic inclusions are removed from steel, passing through a tundish to a continuous casting mould 6, by a veil of bubbles 14 of inert gas, e.g. N 2 or Ar, close to the outlet or outlets of the tundish. The gas rises from at least one transverse row of tubes or permeable bricks 11 across the full tundish width in a refractory lining 3 of the sheet metal tundish 4. It raises the inclusions to be trapped in a layer of liquid slag or powder 10. Outlet spouts 5 of the tundish preferably dip into the melt in the mould. Flamescarfed slabs from a cast strand are said to show less loss and sheet steel cold-rolled therefrom to show less material rejectable for macroscopic inclusions.
