Abstract

1438826 Continuous casting VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE ALPINE MONTAN AG 9 Ang 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37868/73 Heading B3F To reduce segregation in continuously cast steel, particularly C- and Mn-containing steels, slab having a width of more than 1000 mm. is cast in a vertical water-cooled mould 4 to produce a strand having a liquid core 8 of length L m., the core being penetrated by the inflowing stream 14 of molten steel having a velocity v cm./sec., L and v being so related that their values lie within the area B shown hatched in the graph of Fig. 2. It is said that the hardness in the segregated core zone is up to 30% higher than that of the non-segregated skin zone, as a result of the turbulence and flow in the core 8. The curve 18 in Fig. 2 represents approximate upper limits for the stream velocity v. The area B represents the range for limited segregation. Strong segregations are said to occur in the lower area A. Examples of steel compositions are given.
