1308751 Retractive switches TRW Inc 7 June 1971 [12 June 1970] 19174/71 Heading H1N A switch assembly comprises a hollow body 10 open at both ends, a tubular operating plunger 12 disposed to project at one end of the body 10 and adapted to reciprocate within the body, fixed contacts 18 secured within the body, a plunger spring 16 compressible by movement of the plunger 12, a movable contact 14 associated with the plunger spring 16, and a separate base 24 adapted to close off the other end of the body 10 and having a pair of fastener legs extending therefrom for retaining the switch in a suitable aperture in a mounting panel. As shown, the plunger 12 has two rectangular studs 54 slidingly engaging grooves (32, Fig. 2, not shown) in the body 10, and two fixed contacts 18 have contact pads 44 and terminal portions 42, the latter fitting into slots (38) in body 10. The moving contact 14 comprises a tube closed at one end and having contact ears 45 for bridging the fixed contacts 44. The switch is assembled by inserting the plunger 12 into body 10 to project from the right-hand side thereof, the fixed contacts 18 are fitted into the body, the movable contact 14 enters partly into the hollow end of plunger 12, the spring 16 is seated within the tubular part of contact 14, and then a central spigot on the base 24 is located in spring 16 and the base 24 secured to body 10 by adhesive, heat sealing, or ultrasonic welding. Finally an 0-ring 20 is fitted around the projecting end of plunger 12 and a cap 22 is secured over flange 26 of body 10, thereby compressing the sealing ring 20 against both the body and plunger.
