Abstract

1,219,497. Retroactive switches. ITW Ltd. 3 Oct., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 47034/68. Heading H1N. A switch, controlling a light 11 for illumin. ating the interior of a refrigerator when the door is open, comprises two movable resilient contacts 14, 15 made of carbon steel strip. The contact 14 is frictionally retained between portions 18, 19 of a cover 9 and the contact 15 is retained between portions 24, 25 of the cover. The cover is made of polypropylene as is an operating member 30. The operating member comprises a wedgeshaped portion 33 which is forced between the contacts 14, 15 as the result of a pivotal operating force applied to a member 31. When the operating force is removed, by opening the refrigerator door, the resilience of the contacts 14, 15 forces out the operating member which causes the contacts to close and complete the supply to the light 11. The member is pivoted about an integral hinge portion or, in a modification, by a hook-shaped projection. In an alternative embodiment, not shown, the contacts are symmetrical and retained in a tubular housing which is held in a hole in a panel by resilient legs. The operating member is axially reciprocable and the end which is inserted between the contacts is parabolic in cross-section and the shape can be selected to determine the relationship between position and restoring force. It is stated that the resilient contact can be replaced by a movable contact operated on by a separate spring.
