Abstract
1435434 Retractive switches BURROUGHS CORP 2 May 1974 [1 June 1973] 19225/74 Heading H1N In a switch assembly in which conductive leads on the underside of a flexible diaphragm 22, Fig. 2, are deflected into engagement with contacts 16 on a rigid base 14, the actuator 54 is coupled to the flexible diaphragm through a compression coil spring 42 while resistance to movement of the actuator 54 is increased by a concentric coil spring 44 engaged between a flange 56 of the actuator 54 and a stationary support 38. The actuating spring 42 has a region 72 of close coils and a region 74 of open coils whereby two spring rates are obtained so that a firm application of the contacts is obtained to avoid contact bounce. Conical surfaces of the outer flange 56 and of an internal projection 70 support the springs 42, 44 against lateral deflection when compressed. The spring 42 acts on the diaphragm 22 through flexured member 28 made of thicker more rigid material than the diaphragm 22 but having slits 34 around the central region to render it flexible. The member 28 has a pair of projections 76, Fig. 7, on its underside adapted to co-operate with a pair of parallel contacts 24. The projections 76 are arcuate to permit the member 28 to tilt freely by rolling. Universal tilting is obtained, by providing only a narrow contact region 78 between the member 28 and the spring 42. The parallel contacts 24 may also be separated in the region of engagement to form pairs of axially aligned contacts 90, Fig. 11, whereby initial contact is made at the pointed ends with high pressure until the contact area is increased. A button 48 may be releasably attached to the actuator 54 by means of flexible prongs 64 engageable in a notched recess 66, 68.
