Lift valves; ball and float valves; leakage, preventing.-A valve of the type in which a flexible conical packing is expanded by the pressure of the controlled fluid has the conical packing retained on the valve stem c' between a flange or disk c<2> and a button-like end c<3> made integral with the stem which has passages e, f to admit inlet pressure behind the packing. The spindle is formed with a screw-thread engaging a nut j removably secured in the casing by a screwed member k, and is packed by a flexible sleeve d<1> held between a plate l and the back of the valve member. This form may be actuated by a spring- loaded pull or by a ball and float mechanism. In a modification, the valve member is separate from the spindle, which is of the ordinary type.
