Abstract
1306610 Quenching apparatus DREVER CO 30 Oct 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 51731/70 Heading C7N Quenching apparatus for quenching elongate articles such as pipe 74 includes a support structure in the form of an annulus surrounding the longitudinal axis of the article and through which the article is moved during quenching and an array of jet structures mounted around the support. Each jet nozzle 58 is mounted on a block 56 and is supplied with quenching fluid through passage 70 flexible conduit 42 and a ring header 34 mounted on the support. The jet block 56 is mounted on slide rods 72 and is biased towards article 74 by a pair of coil springs 76. Wheel 60 on the jet block contacts the article as it moves and, with the biasing action of the springs, ensures that the jet is maintained at a constant distance from the article during quenching. Rods 72 and springs 76 are in turn mounted on slide component 54 which, by means of draw bolt 80 and guide bolt 82, can be adjusted and clamped at a desired position radially on the support. For quenching larger diameter articles all of the surrounding jets may be in operation to form a continuous fluid curtain around the article. For smaller diameter articles, certain of the jet structures may be withdrawn radially and made inoperative as shown in Fig.3 to allow the remainder to be at the desired distance from the article. Jet spoons 68 are provided to control the angle of the jet and to ensure that they form a continuous quenching curtain. The quenching apparatus may include a plurality of such supports, with their associated jet structures, disposed along the longitudinal axis of the article Fig. 1 (not shown).
