788,752. Surface hardening. ANGUS & CO., Ltd. G., and DAVISON. J. W. Sept. 4, 1956 [June 6, 1955]. No. 16140/55. Class 72 Apparatus for flame hardening gear teeth comprises several sets of burners and quenching jets operating and moving on a common carriage, the sets being relatively adjustable for each set to act on one of a corresponding number of teeth at multiple-tooth intervals, the sets also being adjustable individually on the carriage in the direction of movement. As shown, a pillar 1. attached to the traversing table of a hardening machine. carries by means of a vertically adjustable sleeve 6, a support tube 2 to which three sleeves 10 are attached for horizontal movement on a rack. Each sleeve 10 has a split boss 10a in which slides a rod 14 having a rack 15, the lower end of the rod carrying, by means of an adjustable tubular shaft 20, a pair of angularly adjustable burners 26 and quenching jets 31. By means of the various adjustments the burners and quenching jets may be positioned each on a single tooth of a gear wheel. The teeth being treated may be spaced from each other by a predetermined number of teeth so that, by indexing the gear one tooth at a time, a sector may be treated, the wheel then being turned to bring an untreated sector into position for treating.
