Abstract
861,683. Turning. TRINDLER, F. June 7, 1957 [June 14, 1956], No. 18162/57. Class 83 (3). A method of turning a cast ring comprises checking the ring by means of adjustable grooved rollers which drive the ring about its central axis, and applying adjustable cutting tools to remove the skin &c. prior to profile turning the ring to the desired crosssection by form tools, arranged at least partly around the periphery of the ring section. The cast ring R, Fig. 1, is supported and rotated by rollers 114 in a barrel-shaped machine 110 supported by legs 131. The machine may be arranged in an inclined position or horizontally. The rollers 114, Fig. 3, are carried by spindles 113 in brackets 115, 116, pivoted about a spindle 101 parallel to the spindles 113. The latter are driven by pinions 108a engaging gear-wheels 109 on their ends. The pinions may be driven by belt pulleys 105 or by individual electric motors 106. The rollers are pivoted to engage the ring R by links 129, Fig. 4, connected at one end to the brackets 115, 116, and at the other ends to a yoke 126 guided in a slideway 127. The yokes are connected by a link 124 to centre segmental gears 122 rotated by a circular rack 121, moved in turn by a piston-and-cylinder device 119, Fig. 3. Tool holders and rests.-A number of different tool holders are described for use with the machine. One of these, adapted to turn the whole periphery of the ring, comprises a scissorlike arrangement 135 pivoted at 133, one arm carrying a cam-plate 138, and the other arm a piston-and-cylinder device 142, 143, having a roller 140 engaging a groove in the cam-plate. Actuation of the piston brings a pair of formtools 132 into cutting position against the rod R, a stop 145 limiting the inward movement. Other arrangements of driving rollers are described.
