Abstract

1305340 Feeding sheets TEXTRON Inc 27 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 44822/71 Heading B8R Pieces of fabric 24, Figs. 2, 6 and 14, having different physical characteristics on their opposite sides, e.g. different colours, are stacked on edge in a hopper 26 in random arrangement with respect to which surface faces forward, the pile being urged forwards by a force 32 acting on support means 28, against lower and upper shuttles 36, 46 actuated by cylinders 38, 48. A crank-operated picker device 64 having a picker head with a plurality of pointed teeth engages the upper part of the leading piece 86 and bends it forwards, whereafter the shuttle 46 is lowered behind the piece 86 and the shuttle 36 is first raised to flatten the upper part against the shuttle 46 and then lowered. A cylinder 88 then moves a rod 102, Fig. 9, to the left to move a pawl 100 against the piece and move the piece to the left into the nip between endless belts 106, 108, Fig. 10. A photo-electric device 56, 58 senses the orientation of the piece 86 and according thereto the axial direction of belt pulley 112, 114 is rotated through 90 degrees in one direction or the other by a cylinder 130, whereby all the pieces leave the belts 106, 108 in the same orientation and are then carried over tray by a belt 146 until the front edge engages a stop bar. A photo-electric device 168, 170 senses the presence of a piece, and when no piece is present actuates the separator mechanism 64, 46, 36 to supply the next piece. A further photo-electric device 196, 198 senses a piece present in a sewing-machine 18, and if no piece is present causes a cylinder to retract the stop bar.
