1305253 Polymerizing ethylene MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 15 April 1970 [16 April 1969] 17985/70 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized in a tubular reactor under a pressure greater than 1000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in the presence of a reaction initiator, a reaction inhibitor being introduced into the polymerizing mass, when at a temperature not more than 30‹ C. below the maximum reaction temperature. The inhibitor may be introduced downstream of the point of maximum temperature. Ethylene may be introduced at one or more points in the reactor. The initiator may be oxygen or an organic peroxide, hydroperoxide or perester. The inhibitor may be a phenol, e.g. 3,5-xylenol, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenol, 2-t-butoxyanisole, 2,6 - di - t - butyl - 4 - ethylphenol, 2,6- di - t - butyl - 4 - methylphenol, or a biphenol or bisphenol. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene with a mixture of lauroyl peroxide, t-butyl perisobutyrate, t-butyl peracetate and di-t-butyl peroxide as initiator and 2,6 - di - t - butyl - 4 - methylphenol as inhibitor. Paraffinic, aromatic and alcoholic solvents for the initiator and inhibitor may serve as chain transfer agents.
