Abstract
1,230,507. Monovinyl aromatic polymer compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 21 July, 1969 [13 Aug., 1968], No. 36539/69. Heading C3P. A composition consists of from 80 to 97 weight per cent of (A) a polymer of at least 60 weight per cent of a monovinyl aromatic monomer wherein the vinyl group is attached to the benzene ring, and containing up to 10 carbon atoms and 0 to 40 weight per cent of another monomer copolymerizable therewith, and from 3 to 20 weight per cent of (B) a toughening agent which is uniformly dispersed throughout (A) and which consists of or contains at least 3 weight per cent based on the weight of (A) + (B) of (C) a block copolymer of 1,3-butadiene and a monovinyl aromatic monomer having the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, the weight proportion of monovinyl aromatic units being from 30 to 45 and the weight proportion of 1,3- butadiene units being from 55 to 70; the block copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of from 1À2 to 1À7 decilitre per gram (in toluene at 25‹ C.); a weight average molecular weight of from 100,000 to 500,000; a number average molecular weight of 60,000 to 300,000; a Mooney viscosity ML-1-4 at 100‹ C. of from 50 to 150, and 5 to 25 per cent of the butadiene units therein having a 1,2-vinyl configuration. Component (A) may be polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Component (B) may contain a rubbery butadiene polymer, e.g. polybutadiene or a random copolymer of butadiene and styrene. Component (C) may contain styrene as the monovinyl aromatic monomer. The composition may be made by polymerizing the monomers of component (A) in the presence of component (B) dispersed therein and while subjecting the mixture to a shearing agitation.
