Abstract
1,145,923. High impact styrene polymers. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 11 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 10748/66. Heading C3G. A high impact styrene polymer is prepared by a process comprising polymerizing from 99 to 80 parts by weight of a styrene monomer with from 1 to 20 parts of an elastomer consisting of natural rubber, a homopolymer of butadiene or a rubbery copolymer of butadiene in the presence of from 0À5 to 10 parts by weight of the styrene monomer and elastomer taken together of (a) a block copolymer of a conjugated diolefin and and an alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon or (b) a graft copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon upon a polymer of a conjugated diolefin, said copolymer (a) or (b) containing in chemically combined form from 30 to 90 weight per cent of the alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon and from 70 to 10 weight per cent of the conjugated diolefin, the polymerization mixture being agitated during at least the initial part of the polymerization. In one embodiment, a solution of the elastomer in the styrene monomer is partially polymerized with agitation prior to addition of copolymer (a) or (b) and completion of polymerization. Alternatively, a mixture of the styrene monomer, the elastomer and copolymer (a) or (b) is partially polymerized with agitation and polymerization is completed without agitation. In the examples, stereospecific polybutadiene is grafted with styrene in the presence of (a) a butadiene-styrene or isoprenestyrene block copolymer or (b) a stereospecific polybutadiene grafted with styrene.
