Abstract

Ethylene polymers are made by polymerizing ethylene alone, or with another copolymerizable monomer e.g. propylene, in the presence of an initiator comprising a #-allylic compound of a transition metal of Group IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table, at a pressure of at least 1,000 atmospheres. The temperature and pressure is preferably chosen so that the reaction mixture exists as a single fluid phase until its removal from the reaction zone. The mode of polymerization is substantially bulk, and preferably effected continuously. Chain transfer agents such as hydrogen may be present. The #-allyl compound may be tris (#-allyl) or tris (#-2-methallyl) chromium, tetra (#-allyl) or tetra (#-2- methallyl) zirconium, or tetrakis (#-2-methallyl) titanium.
