Abstract

Homo- or co-polymers of ethylene are obtained by polymerizing in the presence of a free-radical initiator, at a temperature of between 50 DEG and 400 DEG C. using a two-stage polymerization process, said process being characterized in that polymerization is commenced in a first reaction zone at a pressure of between 1800 and 3500 atmospheres and then continued in a second reaction zone at a pressure of between 1300 and 3000 atmospheres, and that the pressure in the second reaction zone is maintained at not less than 50 atmospheres and at not more than 500 atmospheres below the pressure in the first reaction zone. Copolymers with propylene and vinyl acetate are exemplified.
