Abstract
Ethylene is (co)polymerised at 100-400 degrees C under pressure of 700-5000 kg/cm2, in presence of an initiator, followed by separation of a major portion of the polymer from the reaction mixture, using one or more high pressure product separation devices which contain the polymer produced and unreacted ethylene and of which at least one is operated at a pressure of 500-1000 kg/cm2, this being followed by recycling of the remainder contg. unreacted ethylene. Quality control at the separation stage rather than at the polymerisation stage makes it possible to obtain easily and continuously, polymer of two or more specific qualities and with distinct characteristics.
