Abstract

1530023 Continuous polymerization of elastomers/vinyl aromatic mixtures UNITED STERLING CORP Ltd 11 March 1977 [24 March 1976] 11927/76 Heading C3P Toughened polymers are produced by (a) providing in a first zone, a feed mixture comprising a solution of an elastomeric polymer in a monomer which is a vinyl aromatic or vinylidene aromatic monomer; (b) passing effluent from said first zone continuously into a first reaction vessel; (c) continuously withdrawing effluent from the first reaction vessel and subjecting it to further polymerization in at least one downstream reaction vessel and recovering the toughened polymer from the last reaction vessel by devolatilization of unreacted monomer and volatile solvent, if any; and also (d) continuously withdrawing effluent from said first reaction vessel and recycling it to the said first reaction zone so as to control the solids content of the effluent of said first zone to at least 1À5 times the solids content of said feed mixture in (a), but not more than 45 wt. per cent. In preferred embodiments the first zone is a prereaction vessel or a mixing vessel, and the reactors are tubular and provided with agitators.
