Abstract

1465761 Styrene polymerization MONSANTO CO 8 March 1974 [9 March 1973 (2)] 10421/74 Heading C3P A styrene monomer is bulk polymerized in two stages to obtain a product having a Standinger molecular weight of 20,000-100,000 and a dispersion index of 2À0-4À0 in two stirred reaction zones, the first being 10-100% filled with liquid and resulting in a solids concentration of 10-60%, the second being 15-75% filled with liquid, the remainder being vapour, and resulting in a solids concentration of 40-90%. The first reactor may be operated at 120-180‹ C. and 1À05-10À55 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the second at 130-180‹ C. and a lower pressure. Preferably vapour is removed from the second reactor to cool it and recycled to the first reactor.
