Abstract

1304782 Rotary retort furnaces ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 2 Sept 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 42057/70 Heading F4B A slightly inclined rotary retort furnace is provided with internal means for recycling part of the material therein back towards the upstream end of the furnace. Reactant materials from screw feeder 42 and pipe 44 are introduced into the inner retort tube, which is surrounded by a jacket 20 through which controlled quantities of partially recirculated combustion products from an associated combustion chamber flow (Fig. 1, not shown). An annular dam 12 midway down the furnace, causes a build up of solid product material part of which is recirculated, the remainder passing on for discharge past a gastight star valve at the other end of the furnace (Fig. 1, not shown). The recycling means comprises either one or more openended return feed tubes 100 -helically wound around the retort tube inner wall, and/or screw recycling means 60 comprising a return tube having a pair of return flight elements mounted within it, which is mounted within the retort tube to rotate therewith, and is fed by opposed scoops 70 (and see Fig. 3, not shown) which also rotate with the retort tube. When used to produce HF drawn off through flue 52, pipe 44 supplies sulphuric acid and feeder 42 fluorspar, the recycling means recycling predetermined quantities of by product calcium sulphate from upstream of the annular dam 12.
