Abstract

1,180,527. Rotary furnaces. COMMISSAKIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE, 30 Jan., 1968 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 4610/68. Heading F4B. A rotary melting furnace comprises a cylin- drical shell with frusto-conical ends 2 and 3 driven by a pinion 15 engaging a ring gear 16, an outer stationary casing 4, and a cooling system comprising axial spray tubes 10 fed by tubes 7 and connected to pipes 11 extending into recesses formed over the frusto-conical ends. Water from these flows out by centrifugal action, spreading over adjacent parts of the shell before falling through the opening 17 with the rest of the water. The furnace is supported within the casing 4 on ball races 5 and 6 and may be heated by plasma torches (Fig. 2b). Cylindrical extensions 19 of the furnace and cylindrical cooling spray extensions 20 enable the length of the furnace to be varied.
