Abstract

Grates; air supply, regulating.-The air supply to the rear part of the underside of a grate is regulated by a slide having openings adapted to register with corresponding openings in a fixed plate beneath the grate and open or close them in a progressive manner. Fig. 1 shows the slide 6 applied to a chain grate. It is mounted in guides 7 beneath the fixed perforated plate 5 and operrated by rack and pinion gear 9, 10 through rods 11. The openings in the plate 5 are equal in size, but the openings in the slide decrease in width towards the rear, while the parts of the slide between openings increase in width. Where an undergrate blast is used, the air-regulating slide forms the top of a blast chamber which is also provided at the bottom with a. perforated slide for the removal of ashes.
