Grates; air supply, regulating; ashpits.-The underside of the main portion of each grate bar of the parent invention is enclosed by a casing such as 4 so that all the air supply for the bar from the ashpit is compelled to pass through a conduit 7 at the rear of the cross piece 6 which is thus effectively ecoled. Where extra high pressure is used the casing 4 may be shortened as shown at 4<1>, so as to relieve the passage 7 by allowing some of the air to reach the grate bar direct. The casing 4 is mounted on the frame 8 which carries the rods 9 by which the grate bars are reciprocated and makes joint with the grate bar (or grate bars) which it serves, by means of the channels 10. Any ash dropping through or between the bars collects in the casing 4 and is conveyed away by a pipe 11 (or 12 Fig. 4) into a chamber 13, Fig. 3, forming the base of the lowest step (or the two or more lowest steps) of the grate. The forced or exhaust draught air current in which the ash is thus carried, being released in the chamber 13, may serve as combustion air for the corresponding grate unit, though a cut-off valve 19 is fitted so that a separate air supply at 16 may be used if desired. Ash is withdrawn at 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, the enclosing casing takes the form of a plate 21 secured to the grate bar and delivering into a channel 22 arranged beneath the driving bar 9. In this case the direct air supply designed to relieve the channel 7 is at 25.
