Abstract

1300731 Linear oil-soluble polyesters CASTROL Ltd 29 Dec 1969 [25 Sept 1968] 45544/68 Heading C3R [Also in Division C5] A linear, oil-soluble polyester, free from aromatic groups in the linear chain, but which may contain pendant aromatic groups is derived from certain mixtures of di-primary diols and certain dicarboxylic acids or diesters thereof. The dicarboxylic acid is (a) a dimer of a di- or poly unsaturated fatty acid or diester thereof, (b) an adduct of two different di- or poly-unsaturated fatty acids or esters thereof or (c) an adduct of a di- or poly-unsaturated fatty acid and a mono-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or ester thereof. The diol mixture comprises (a) a mixture of a diol containing 3-5 C atoms and a diol containing 5-50 C atoms, (b) a mixture of a dihydroxy substituted branched chain hydrocarbon containing 3-50 C atoms between the hydroxyl groups and a diol containing at least one oxygen atom in the carbon chain between the hydroxyl groups or (c) a mixture of a linear diol containing a chain of 4-50 C atoms between the hydroxyl groups and a diol containing at least one oxygen atom in the carbon atom chain between the two hydroxyl groups. Lubricating compositions are prepared by dissolving the polyester in a mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon oil, a synthetic ester or a polyether. In the examples the additives are prepared by reacting the dimerized unsaturated fatty acids or their dimethyl esters with (a) a mixture of 1,2-dodecanediol and tetraethylene glycol, hexaethylene glycol or 1,4-butanediol, or (b) a mixture of neopentyl glycol and tetramethylene glycol.
