Abstract

1417615 Sulphurized complex esters INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 27 March 1973 [30 March 1972 15 Sept 1972] 14758/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A method of preparing an additive for lubricating oil which comprises sulphurizing an unsaturated polyester product obtained by condensing (i) one or more diols of the formula where R 2 is a divalent saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbyl group or a divalent group of the formula -(RO) m R-, where R is a divalent, saturated hydrocarbyl group of 2 or 3 carbon atoms and m is 1 or 2; with (ii) a stoichiometric excess, carboxyl relative to hydroxyl groups, of a oarboxylic acid mixture containing (a) one or more monocarboxylic acids of the formula R 1 COOH, where R 1 is a mono- or poly-ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic hydrooarbyl group or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, with the proviso that at least a proportion of the R 1 groups are monoethylenically unsaturated groups; or an ester forming derivative of such a monocarboxylic acid or mixture of monocarboxylic acids capable of undergoing esterification or transesterification with said diol; and (b) from 0À05 to 0À5 moles, per mole of said monocarboxylic acid or mixture of monocarboxylic acids, of one or more dicarboxylic acids (or an ester forming derivative thereof capable of undergoing esterification or transesterification with said diol) of the formula where R 3 is a divalent, saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbyl group; said unsaturated polyester product having a degree of ethylenic unsaturation in the range 0À20 to 0À6 moles of ethylenic bonds per 100 grams. It is believed to comprise 10- 100 mole per cent of and 0-90 mole per cent of R 1 COOR 2 OOOR 1 . Sulphurization is preferably effected by heating with sulphur in the presence of zinc oxide. A light mineral oil or a synthetic oil may be used as diluent. Examples prepare complex esters and sulphurized derivatives thereof from: oleic acid, ethylene glycol and succinic or adipic acid; oleic acid, diethyleneglycol and fumaric acid or adipic acid; undecenoic acid, neopentyl glycol and adipic acid; tall oil fatty acids, neopentyl glycol and adipic acid or maleic anhydride; and tall oil fatty acids, ethylene glycol and adipic acid.
