Abstract

1,232,194. Metal-containing polyesters. KANSAI PAINT CO. Ltd. 23 Jan., 1969 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 3966/69. Heading C3R. A rust-proofing paint comprises a film-forming high molecular weight metal-containing reaction product having a carboxyl group terminating its structure, the reaction product being obtained by reacting a metal-containing polycarboxylic acid having free carboxyl groups and an acid value of 50 to 300 with polyhydric alcohol in an amount stoichiometrically less than the carboxyl groups present in the metalcontaining polycarboxylic acid, the latter being obtained by reacting an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid having free carboxyl groups with a hydroxide or oxide of Pb, Ca, Co, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Mg, Ba, Cd, Sr or Cr in an amount which is stoichiometrically less than the carboxyl groups present in said aliphatic polycarboxylic acid. Polycarboxylic acids which may be used to react with the above metal compounds to give a metal containing acid of acid value 50 to 300, are tall oil dimer acid, linseed oil dimer acid, maleic acid, and other dicarboxylic acids. They may also be mixed with a stoichiometrically smaller amount (with respect to carboxyl groups) of a monocarboxylic acid such as vegetable oil fatty acids such as linseed oil fatty acid, tall oil fatty acid, soybean oil fatty acid, rosin acids and benzoic acid. The metal-containing acids produced are then polycondensed with polyhydric alcohols such as glycerol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, and tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane, to give the reaction product of the invention, together with water, the reaction mass, after removal of some of the water, is dispersed in organic media such as xylene. The final composition may be pigmented, mixed with oil modified alkyd resins, and other known additives.
