Abstract

1413728 Gas turbine lubricants STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 17 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 33961/73 Heading C5F A lubricant base stock consists of (a) 20- 80 wt. per cent of a mineral oil having a viscosity of 4 to 10 centistokes at 210‹ F. and (b) 80-20 wt. per cent of a carboxylate ester selected from the diesters of aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids and C 4-20 alcohols, fully esterified trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol esters of C 2-20 monocarboxylic acids, diesters of 1,3-butylene glycol or of neopentyl glycol with C 4-20 monocarboxylic acids. The ester components (b) used in the examples are those of isophthalic acid and C 6-12 straight chain alkanol mixtures, di-2- ethylhexyl isophthalate, an 80 : 20 (molar) mixture of iso-octyl isodecyl adipate and di-2- ethylhexyl adipate, di-2-ethylhexyl adipate, 1,3- butylene glycol pelargonate heptanoate, trimethylol propane tripelargonate, pentaerythritol monobutyrate triheptanoate cross-linked with azelaic acid, and esterification products of 1 molar part pentaerythritol with (1) 2À6 parts n-hexanoic acid, 0À4 parts neoheptanoic acid and I'O parts n-butyric acid or (2) 2À45 parts nhexanoic acid, 0À8 parts of a mixture of octanoic and decanoic acid and 0À75 parts 2-ethylhexanoic acid. Gas turbine lubricants comprise (1) a major amount of the above base stock, (2) 0À1 to 10 wt. per cent of an antioxidant, (3) up to 10% of a viscosity index improver, (4) 0À005-1% of a metal deactivator, and (5) 0À1 to 5% of an extreme pressure additive. In the examples: the antioxidants used are N-ethyl dioctyl phenothiazine, p,p<SP>1</SP>-dioctyl diphenylamine, styrenated phenyl-#-naphthylamine, phenyl-α-naphthylamine, octylphenyl-α-naphthylamine, and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- methylenebis - (2,6 - di - t - butyl phenol); the viscosity index improvers used are polymethacrylates and polyisobutylenes; the metal deactivators used are sebacic acid and benzotriazole; and the extreme pressure additives used are tricresyl phosphate and trixylyl phosphate.
