Abstract

1300603 Combustion-product engines; valve gear; generating combustion products under pressure; reciprocating compressors G B WARREN 11 March 1970 [11 March 1969] 11680/70 Headings F1B F1L F1N and F1S Substantially constant pressure combustion occurs in a combustion chamber 16 in valved communication with a compression cylinder 12 and an expansion cylinder 14 and a common integral water jacket 82 is provided for the combustion chamber and head of the expansion cylinder. Air is drawn into the compression cylinder 12 through a pair of inlet valves 22 and delivered through an outlet valve 24, comprising seven spring biased stainless steel discs (54), Fig.3 (not shown), to the combustion chamber 16 through a conduit 46 and a pair of nozzles 70, 72. The nozzles 70, 72 cause swirl in the air entering the chamber around a fuel nozzle 68 and through openings 80, which may have swirl producing vanes, at the down-stream end of a passage 81 between cap 66 and a liner 69. A spark or glow plug 74 extends into the liner 69. The main body 63 of the chamber 16 contains a stainless steel liner 76. The engine may be provided with an even number of in-line or V-arranged cylinders, e.g. V-8, half the cylinders being used for compression and half for expansion. Conduits 90, 92 lead combustion products to respective expansion cylinder intake valves 96. The valves 96 are opened at T.D.C. of the respective piston 88 and closed after the piston has moved to provide 12 to 20% of the cylinder volume. The valves 96 may contain sodium and air from the conduit 46 may be fed through a nozzle 112, Fig. 8 to flow down each valve stem 110 and feed a cylinder 111 containing a valve closing piston 110A.
