Abstract
1415463 External combustion engine M GIRODIN 7 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11220/73 Heading F1S In an external combustion engine air is compressed in a plurality of cylinders 2 and after compression is delivered into a common combustion chamber 8 in which fuel is burned to produce hot combustion gases and the hot gases are returned to the cylinders 2 to do work therein. The combustion chamber 8 includes means to promote a pressure drop therein so as to maintain a uniform mean flow of gas through the chamber despite intermittent air admittance and gas delivery and the hot gases are returned to the cylinders at a pressure close to the pressure at which compressed air is delivered to the chamber. The cylinder head of each cylinder comprises at least two valves, one 4 for delivering the compressed air to the combustion chamber 8 and the other 5 for returning hot gases into the cylinder. The combustion chamber is divided by a partition 15 into two compartments communicating through a restriction serving as the means to promote the pressure drop. The introduction of fuel takes place through the line 16 which opens at the centre of the partition through the jet 16'. The compressed air arriving from the delivery manifold 6 is passed through the partition by two ducts which are disposed on opposite sides of the jet 16' in housings 17'.
