Abstract
997,586. Exhaust silencers and manifolds; heating air charge. HANLON & WILSON CO. Aug. 3, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 29886/62. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F4] An exhaust silencer comprises a casing 4 divided by a partition 18 into a pair of chambers 19, 20, into each of which an individual exhaust conduit from at least one cylinder opens, the chambers having a common outlet 31 and the conduits being arranged so that they deliver alternately into their respective chambers. In a four cylinder engine, Fig. 3, the exhaust conduits 21 and 25 lead into chamber 19 and conduits 26, 27, into chamber 20, the firing order being such that pulses arrive alternately in the chambers 19, 20 in the order 21, 26, 25, 27, whereby back pressure is reduced. The exhaust silencer casing 4 may be surrounded by an outer casing 1 in which air is heated. The casing may have an inlet 9 and outlet 10 leading heated air to a vehicle compartment; a second outlet 11 may lead to the carburetter inlet. Heat conducting pins 28, 29 may project from the silencer casing wall 4 into the air heater space.
