Abstract

1,040,478. Generating combustion products under pressure. R. B. BLACK. July 9, 1963 [July 12, 1962], No. 27146/63. Heading F1L. The invention relates to an oscillating column type combustion apparatus which comprises an air inlet chamber, a combustion chamber and an exhaust chamber, the air inlet chamber having a number of air inlet openings which have associated therewith reed valves which are adapted to open and close the openings, the reed valves normally being open. The exhaust chamber has a combustion gas outlet also a number of exhaust gas openings which have associated therewith reed valves which are adapted to open and close the openings, the reed valves normally being open. The apparatus shown in Fig. 2 comprises an air inlet chamber 12, a combustion chamber 11 and an exhaust chamber 15, the chamber 12 being of square shape in crosssection as seen in Fig. 5 and formed with an internal cylindrical bore 17 and with a plurality of transverse bores 27. The left-hand end of the cylindrical bore 17 is closed by a screwed plug 22 which is arranged to support a fuel supply line 25. The right-hand end of the bore 17 is connected by a throat portion 13 to the combustion chamber 11. Each of the outer faces of the inlet chamber block 16 is formed with a shallow cylindrical recess 28, each recess being closed by a cover plate 29 which is formed with a plurality of circular air inlet openings 30 each of which is in alignment with a transverse bore 27. Each of the air inlet openings 30 has associated therewith a reed valve 47 which in its normal position is in the open position the valve closing only when the pressure within the apparatus has increased as a result of combustion. The assembly of reed valves 47 is in the form of a series of petals integral with a central portion 46 which is secured by means of a bolt 48 to the inner surface of the cover plate 29. Supported within the cylindrical bore 17 is an assembly of three frusto-conical ducts 18, 19, 20, the fuel inlet nozzle 26 projecting into the first duct 18 so that as gaseous fuel is discharged therethrough so air is drawn in through the inlets 30 and bores 27 by the ejector effect. The mixture of fuel and air is ignited in the combustion chamber by means of the spark device 34. The exhaust chamber 15 is generally similar to the air inlet chamber but differs therefrom in that no frusto-conical ducts 18, 19, 20 are provided and in that the right-hand end of the chamber is open and is connected to a combustion gas outlet duct which leads the gases to a point of use. The reed valves of the exhaust gas outlet chamber are normally open and close the exhaust gas outlet ports 30<SP>1</SP> only when the pressure within the apparatus has increased as a result of combustion, the valves re-opening when the pressure falls after the gases have discharged through the outlet 36, the residual exhaust gases then discharging through the outlets 30<SP>1</SP>. A further embodiment is described in which the air inlet chamber is of circular external form, the reed valves associated with the air inlet openings being of arcuate form and secured at one end to the inner surface of the cylindrical cover which closes the recesses corresponding to recesses 28.
