Abstract
1300411 Vehicle transmission H R MORGAN 18 March 1970 [23 Jan 1969] 3732/69 Heading B7H Unitary apparatus includes a prime mover 1, a clutch 7 or equivalent, change speed gear 3, and final drive gearing 4. The flywheel 6 of the prime mover, clutch shaft 7A, third motion shaft 10 of the change speed gear 3 and bevel pinion 14 of final drive gearing 4 are maintained by bearings on a first axis. The pinion 14 meshes a pinion 19 on an axis inclined to the first axis and secured to the cage 20 of differential gearing driving power output members 26, 27. Gears 15, 16 of change speed gear 3 are located to the right of pinions 14, 19, thus allowing positioning of flange 26 further to the left. Pinion 14 may be formed on shaft (10), Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), pinion (19) has internal teeth engaging the pinion (14). The prime mover 1, Fig. 8, is short to facilitate steering of front drive wheels 40, 41 driven through universal joints 34, 35. The clutch may be replaced by a fluid flywheel or torque converter, while the prime mover may be a reciprocating engine with cylinders in one or more rows or in V form or may be a rotary engine.
