Abstract

1298549 Feeding sheets HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORP 16 Nov 1971 [15 March 1971] 53215/71 Heading B8R Sheets 128, Fig. 2, are piled in a hopper comprising front gates 94, Figs. 1 and 2, adjustable along a member 92 according to sheet width and presenting a gap 96 to allow feed of the bottom sheet to feed rollers 98, a backstop 100 adjustable in feed direction according to sheet length, and a bottom table 12 having holes 50 therein and overlaid with a screen 52 having smaller elongated perforation 54 therein, above which are removably arranged lateral support strips 70 on which the pile rests. The lowermost sheet is separated by a feed plate 72 having a surface 74 to engage the rear edge of the sheet and reciprocated by a rock shaft 88 through rods 84. The table 12 is formed with depending flanges 22, 24, 26, 28 defining chambers 32, 36, 40, the bottoms of which are formed by valve members 30, 34, 38 movable by rods 58, 56, 60 to control communication between the chambers and a manifold chamber 44 communicating permanently with a further front chamber 42 and with a suction means 46. The chamber assembly described is located below the right-hand side of the table, and a similar assembly adjoins it below the lefthand side of the table, comprising valve members 30<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP>, 38<SP>1</SP> and a suction means 46<SP>1</SP> , Fig. 1. The degree of suction in the various chambers can thus be varied according to the sheets (e.g. strong suction is desirable below warped areas of the sheets), while the front chambers produce strong suction all the time below the front parts of the sheet to facilitate passage to the rollers 98. An imperforate dropleaf 68 hinged to the centre of the rear end of the table can be raised out of operative position, or lowered to support the rear ends of long sheets. Tabs 108 formed on body structures 110 secured to a shaft 106 can be raised by the action of a pneumatic piston to raise the rear end of the pile above the feed plate 72 to prevent sheet separation taking place.
