Abstract

891,989. Feeding cards. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. June 2, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24714/59. Class 117. Cards 1 are discharged from magazine 2 for use in a computer by picker 3 reciprocated by cam 46 on driving shaft 45, each card being fed into the nip of rollers 4, 5 provided with notches 6 to accommodate the leading edge of the card, and the rollers 4, 5 delivering the card on to one or other of platforms 7, 8 the choice of platform being made by distributer 10 operated by solenoid 12. The platforms constitute a waiting station. The cards on platforms 7, 8 are tamped into predetermined position by tapper 15 and are selectively discharged therefrom towards the computer by pushers 19 or 20 operated by respective solenoids 25 or 26. Interrupting discharge of magazine 2. Cards 1 in magazine 2 rest on leaf springs 29. These are elevated by pins 33 to interrupt the card discharge; the pins being raised by the driving shaft 45 operating via eccentric 44, bellcrank 40 and stem 36. As shown, the pins are raised every time the picker 3 moves forward, being operated by the common driving shaft 45, so that no discharge takes place although picker 3 reciprocates. When, however, solenoid 49 is operated, armature 48 displaces interposer 47 to the right to permit stems 36 to fall into slots 53. This allows lost motion between bellcrank 40 and stem 36. The pins 33, therefore, do not rise, and the picker 3 discharges the cards normally. Operation. When the computer signals that it needs a card, it operates solenoid 25 or 26, solenoid 12 and solenoid 49. This causes: pusher 19 (or 20) to discharge a card from platform 7 (or 8) towards the computer; pins 33 to drop to allow picker 3 to discharge a card from the magazine 2; and distributer 10 to guide the card from the magazine to the platform which is now empty. In this way the movement of the computer is separated and free from the cycle of the picker 3. Specification 842,810 is referred to.
