Abstract

1,116,271. Packaging-machines. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 12 April, 1966 [9 April, 1965], No. 15992/66. Heading B8C. Apparatus for inserting partitions into cartons previously loaded with articles with rounded shoulders comprises mechanisms 1, 3 which insert the longitudinal and transverse partitions 4, 21 respectively as the carton is fed past them. The articles, e.g. jars, are inserted in the carton in a conventional manner, e.g. suction gripper heads, and are fed to a position 1a. The carton trips a microswitch M 1 and a pusher P 1 thrusts a partition 4 through a slot in the base of the magazine S and into the carton. The carton progresses to a position 2a and trips a microswitch M 2 and an inclined plate P 2 descends and pushes the articles to the front of the carton to assure transverse alignment of the jars. The carton progresses to a plate P 22 , operating a contact (not shown), causing a piston-rod P 3 to be slowly extended in the conveying direction. Mounted on the piston-rod P 3 is a slide C 14 , and adjustably positioned cams 16- 19 which activate a valve V 4 causing a pusher 14 to thrust a transverse partition into the carton every time the valve V 4 is activated, e.g. four times in the embodiment. When the piston-rod P 3 is fully extended it trips a microswitch M 4 causing the plate P 21 to be withdrawn and allowing the carton to move away. To facilitate insertion of the partitions, the slots therein may be V-shaped.
