An apparatus for filling articles into cartons C, comprises first and second conveyers 12, 11 arranged adjacent to one another and each including a plurality of carriers 13 arranged so that the carriers of one conveyer register with the carriers of the other conveyer, a magazine 14 adapted to receive a stack of cartons in a folded condition, a picker 15 movable to enter the lowermost folded carton in the magazine and to place it in a carrier of the first conveyer 12 in an open and erect condition, means 34, 38 at a filling station for positioning end flaps C3, C5 at one end of the open carton to permit an article to enter through that end from the second conveyer 11, means 17 at the filling station for positioning an end flap C2 at the other end of the carton in a closed position and for forming a stop to prevent movement of the article through that end and means at the filling station for transferring articles being conveyed on the second conveyer into open and erect cartons in registering carriers 13 of the first conveyer 12. As shown, the picker 15 is operated by a cam 23 on a main shaft 24 through arms 20, 21 against a spring 26 and by a cam 29 which controls a push-pull rod 27 which acts to swing the arm 20 and the picker 15 so that the latter enters a folded carton when the arm 21 is at its upper position. Movement of a lever 28 operating the rod 27 is controlled by a solenoid-operated latch 31 which prevents a carton being fed to conveyer 11 if the registering carrier of the article conveyer 12 is empty. The means 34, 38, arranged between the conveyers comprises firstly a guide member 34 on an arm 35 which is movable by a cam 36 on the shaft 24, to hold flap C3 and secondly, a fixed ramp 38 which extends to the stack of carton blanks to hold back the flap C5. The arm 35 also actuates a clamp lever 46 which clamps the flap C1 to a fixed anvil 37 prior to operation of a pusher 18 by a lever 39 operated from the shaft 24, to move the article into the open end of the carton. Flap C3 is closed by a tucker 19 and ramps 45 close flaps C4, C5. Fixed ramps 40 prefold tongues on the flaps C1 and C6 and levers 41, 42 close and insert the flaps. A pusher 48 ejects the filled carton.
