Abstract

1,206,583. Attaching articles to display cards. A. J. FREEMANTLE. 4 Oct., 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 30616/66. Heading B8C. In mounting articles on to a display card, a card is positioned at an article mounting station, individual articles are fed from a supply station to and are collated at a transfer station into a group, the collated group of articles is transferred from the transfer station and into contact with the card, the articles are secured to the card and at least the region of the card having the articles secured to it is moved away from said mounting station. In the apparatus shown a display card is taken from a stack 19 by vacuum lifting arms 46 and deposited on stationary table 44 from whence it is pushed by pusher mechanism 42 on to an inclined table 32. Table 32 is mounted in suitable guides and can be moved in steps by cam mechanism 36 from the full line position to the dotted line position shown. Separate articles are fed via shoots 14 to hoppers 12 from which the bottom article may be pushed by reciprocating pushers 20 on to a reciprocable collator plate 28. The pushers 20 are each capable of two lengths of stroke by suitable cam mechanism 126, 128 so that articles may be pushed to different positions on the collator 28. There are also co operating fingers 88 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) associated with the collator 28 to aid in positioning articles thereon. When the articles have been positioned on the collator 28, they are held thereon by suitable grippers and the collator is pushed forward by pusher mechanism 30 and is guided in guides 24, 26 so that a projecting part of each article is brought into contact with the display card on table 32. Means such as a heating bar 66 is then operated by cam mechanism 72 to secure the articles to the card. In the particular embodiment described the bar 66 is used to activate a heat-activated adhesive previously applied to the card. Stapling or other means may however be applied for securing the articles to the card. When one row of articles has been attached to the card, table 32 is moved forward by a step on cam 36 and another row of articles is applied and so on until the card is full. A radial land 40 on cam 36 then allows a quick return movement of table 32 by spring 38 and the card with the articles thereon drops on to shoot 78 by which it is conveyed to an outlet. The various mechanisms are driven in synchronism with each other from a single motor 82. In a further embodiment articles are attached to a continuous web which is subsequently cut into lengths.
