Abstract

1282792 Feeding sheets ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 11 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 43649/70 Heading B8R Sheet feeding apparatus for feeding individual sheets separated from a pile 4 comprises a suction head 7 having an intake port 8 disposed adjacent an outermost sheet of the pile, pumping means 9 having an outlet 10 and having an inlet 12 connected to the suction head 7, means for directing air pumped from the suction head intake port 8 to the outlet 10 from the outlet along the edges of the pile 4 for displacing at least the outermost sheet into contact with the intake port 8 thereby cutting off the air flow to the intake port 8, pumping means 9 and outlet 10 so that any other displaced sheets return to the pile, and means, e.g. pinch rollers 14, 15 on a pivotable frame 16, for transferring the outermost sheet from the suction head. The pile may be held in a container 5 having ports 2 near its base and surrounded by a plenum chamber 6 connected to the outlet 10 of the pump 9, the air flow raising a group 20 of sheets, the top one of which is attracted by suction to the bottom surface 7a of the suction head the portion 18 of which is inclined to the horizontal to aid sheet separation. The edge of the attracted sheet protrudes from the end of portion 18 and is gripped by the rollers 14 and 15, a gear arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), maintaining a constant feed rate as the frame 16 is pivoted towards and away from the suction head. Additional suction ports (47), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be provided above the pile top to facilitate sheet return to the pile, a flap valve (43) preventing air pumped from these ports returning to the pile. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a rotatable vacuum drum (28) replaces the suction head. The pile may be on edge in the container, the outer sheets being bent by the air flow and all but the outermost sheet returning to the pile, when the air flow is cut off, due to the natural resilience of the sheets.
