Open-hearth furnaces; slag, collecting.-Relates to the ports, flues, and roof, and to the means for catching dust, slag, &c.. in a gas-fired regenerative open-hearth smelting furnace. Figs. 1 and 2 show one end, the other end being similar. The central gas flue 13 and the air flues 14, 15 are vertical and in the same plane, and their upper ends communicate with the space above the bridge by three flues or ports of equal length lying side by side and sloping downwardly. These ports have parallel sides, but the air ports converge towards the central gas port 9<x>, so that the separating-walls are thinner towards the bridge while the main walls are formed with offsets at the bridge. The roofs of the ports 9<x> &c. can be independently taken to pieces for repair up to the point 12<x>, where they meet the roof of the hearth, which is continued over the bridge. The air flues descend vertically into the catch-pit, while the gas flue is deflected diagonally thereto, and both catch-pits are provided with brick-lined cast-iron pans 17.
